Kitchen Renovation Part 3

Updated: Sep 23, 2020

In order to be able to install the new cabinets on this wall a lot needed to be done first. This is where the old sink used to be and it had been leaking for years with nothing being done about it. We had to remove all the old plumbing so we could repair the subfloor.

Once that was done we moved onto the window. This was the last window in the house that needed to be replaced. It rained most of the time while we were trying to do this project so we did it a little different than originally planned but it worked just fine.

Always look at the forecast before you start working on a window project.

We squeezed in some work when it got a little better outside. First we removed the sheetrock around the window. Then removed the actual window.

Because of the weather, at this point we removed the old siding & temporarily installed the new siding.

The next day we removed the new siding, installed the moisture barrier wrap & then reinstalled the siding.

It rained for the next few days so we decided to remove the old hood vent & upper cabinets. We then ended up moving 3 outlets & removing a switch which used to be for the garbage disposal.

Before doing anything with electrical ALWAYS make sure breakers are shut off first!

We went back and forth of whether or not we wanted to build a header for the window but we decided not to since none of these 2x4s were even holding up this wall in the first place. The main support is just to the left of the window. Every single 2x4 to the right of that the tops weren't even touching the roof.

Before you replace any windows in your own house, be cautious of what is load bearing & what is not to avoid structural danger, damage, or injury. This goes for all walls as well!

I love our new window! Next we will be installing the new hood vent, doing a few finishing touches to the electrical, adding all new insulation, & then installing all new sheetrock. Be sure to keep an eye out for Kitchen Renovation Part 4!
